To
date the Carmelite Institute has hosted three major conferences on topics of
general interest in the Carmelite tradition. The first, held in
Washington, DC, in 1996, was on the medieval Carmelite text, The Book of
the Institution of the First Monks, and the place of the prophet Elijah
in Carmelite Spirituality. The second, held in Reno, NV, in
1998, was on Carmel and Mary. The most recent conference, on The
Rule of Carmel and its significance for today, was held in San Antonio,
TX, in the summer of 2001, and attracted nearly 500 participants from all
walks of life. Further conferences are in the planning stage, since
these have become one of the most popular initiatives of the Carmelite
Institute.
